Mikes Night 2009: The Dream Team’s Reality
As many observers have described, the current executive committee of the Past Pupils’ Association of St. Michael’s College is indeed a “Dream Team”. It’s a team composed of hand-picked enthusiastic individuals, whose motto is nothing but “strive for excellence”. Following our remarkable success with Cricket Camp and Spelling Contest earlier this year, our Mikes Night was a thrilling success that topped our glory.
This spectacular dinner and dance gala, held on the 14th of November, was an unparalleled event, in comparison to previous years’. Our team has been very keen on introducing unique programs that are both entertaining as well as effective in reaching out to the community. With a guest count of well over four hundred at the fabulous Claireport Banquet Hall in Toronto, the event was very rhythmic with full of energy. With Karaoke songs, salsa dance performance, classical (Barathanartya) dance, and so on, there was never a dull moment. Click here to view the photographs of Mikes Night 2009.
Our chief guest was a young Michaelite, Mr. Navamshan Murugesapillai, who is a successful professional and is well-recognized in various disciplines. The chief guest managed to captivate everyone’s attention with his speech on the so-called “progressive development” for college and Batticaloa as a whole. Pointing out the exemplary life of Swami Vipulanandar and the respect he had for Ret. Rev. Fr. Bonnel, he also emphasized the moral duty of respecting teachers, in addition to respecting the Almighty and parents.
One of the most significant highlights of Mikes Night was honouring the past presidents of our association. Since its inception till now, our association has seen ten outstanding presidents, who have nurtured and nourished this organization to be successful. They were all individually honoured for their outstanding service and a video of their interviews was also played during the award ceremony. Furthermore, the current president, Mr. Tommy Ganeshamoorthy, upon delivering his welcome speech, individually honoured the executive committee members for their tireless service. “I’m very privileged to be working with an amazing team this year”, remarked the president.
The honourary guest Mr. Rajan Nadarajah brought goose bumps to everyone when he proclaimed, during his speech, of his intention to go back to St. Michael’s College and start coaching Basketball again. With his heartfelt dedication to our Alma Mater, he is a role model to many Michaelites. He brought back many memories and enlightened many others as he spoke of the proud history of St. Michael’s College.
The dinner was very delicious with countless dishes catered by Claireport. Everyone enjoyed it. During the dinner, awards were handed out to the winners of Spelling Contest, which was held on the 19th of September. The awards were handed out by Mrs. Renu Daniels, who has been a member of the Past Pupils’ Association of St. Michael’s College since its beginning.
Many have come from the United States to attend Mikes Night. This success must continue and we hope to see many more guests and Michaelites in the years to come.
